International Moving Checklist: Complete Timeline

International moving requires a minimum of 3–6 months of advance planning. Unlike domestic moves, overseas relocations involve visa applications, customs documentation, ocean or air freight booking, and destination-country import regulations. Starting early is the single most important thing you can do to reduce stress and avoid costly delays.

6 Months Before Your Move

  • Research visa and residency requirements for your destination country
  • Begin gathering documents needed for customs (passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, property documents)
  • Contact international moving companies for quotes (get at least 3)
  • Research which items are prohibited or restricted at your destination (varies significantly by country)
  • Research international health insurance options for your destination
  • If applicable, research schools, healthcare, and banking in destination
  • Notify employer, banks, and government agencies of your upcoming international move

3 Months Before Your Move

  • Book your international mover and confirm ocean or air freight service
  • Begin the decluttering process — fewer items = lower freight costs
  • Research what electronics and appliances will work in your destination (voltage differences, plug adapters)
  • Start the customs documentation process with your mover
  • Notify utilities, subscriptions, and services of your move date
  • Research storage options if you'll be leaving items in the US
  • Arrange for cars, pets, and plants (all have specific import requirements)

30 Days Before Your Move

  • Complete a detailed household inventory — every item must be listed for customs
  • Begin packing items you won't need in the next 30 days
  • Confirm your ocean freight booking and expected container loading date
  • Convert important documents to digital backups stored in the cloud
  • Close local bank accounts or arrange for international access
  • Cancel local subscriptions: gym, streaming, newspapers, etc.
  • Arrange temporary housing at your destination for when you first arrive

1 Week Before Your Move

  • Confirm packing date with your international mover
  • Set aside all items traveling with you (as carry-on or checked baggage)
  • Arrange medications: get a 3–6 month supply and check destination import rules
  • Ensure your passport and all travel documents are in a safe, accessible location
  • Complete final walkthrough of your customs inventory with your mover
  • Say your goodbyes — moving internationally is a major life event

On Arrival Day

  • Complete immigration and customs procedures
  • Register with local authorities (required in many countries)
  • Open a local bank account
  • Register children in local schools if applicable
  • Your shipment will arrive separately — your mover will notify you of the delivery window
